2005 RCC Student Wins Photographer of the Year
Amelia Phillips/Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Amelia Phillips of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette was awarded the Photo of the Year honors by the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association Foundation for her photo of a girl and her brothers saying goodbye to their father before he left for Iraq. Phillip's photo, which also placed first in the spot news category, was judged to be the best because of technical quality, originality and overall aesthetics. She received a $1000 prize and an engraved award. Amelia is a 2005 BioCommunications RCC graduate.

Also winning first place honors in the feature category was 1997 RCC Photographic Technology graduate, Jennifer Rotenizer, of the Winston-Salem Journal. Her photograph was one of a series of images made for a photo essay on Tamara Westfall, a teenager who lost her leg in a car accident. The image shows Westfall reacting as her cast is removed from the amputated leg. The contest judges described the photograph as compelling. In a story that appeared in the Journal, Carl Crothers, Executive Editor, said “compelling is an excellent word to describe Jennifer Rotenizer’s work, in more than just this instance. Compelling is her standard.”

The photo contest recognizes and awards excellence in photography at newspapers throughout the South. In its fifth year, the contest attracted 604 photos.
